February 1, 2010
The Park is quiet at this time of the year. Activity is limited to snowplowing and maintenance work.
There is an effort underway to finish the Quad pavilion and concession stand. Electrical and plumbing work is progressing. We need to complete the kitchen, storage rooms and restrooms in time for the start of this baseball season. We’ll also need to complete concrete work on the sidewalks surrounding the facility when the weather breaks. A target of April 1st is being pushed for completion. This will allow us time to prepare the kitchen for the start of the baseball season.
Here are the points of interest as we look out in to 2010:
- Marilyn Dyjak is stepping down from her role as Concession’s Director. Diane Mickles has agreed to assume responsibility for the Park’s concessions. Please join us in thanking Marilyn for her years of service at the Park. Please also welcome Diane as she undertakes this important role.
- Formal contracts for the use of the Park have been sent to all User groups. The contract outlines user fees and general Park rules and regulations for the 2010 season. The scheduling of games will begin in February and we expect another busy season.
- We anticipate several new clubs at the Park this season. The Flower City Soccer League has requested a June date for hosting a soccer tournament. The Rochester Cougar baseball club will be playing at the Park in 4 age groups next spring. Both these groups work with intercity and suburban children to develop unity through sports. We welcome them both.
G&T Baseball will begin on May 1st. Inquiries from Empire USA, the Cobras and Super 9 soccer clubs indicate that early May will be very busy as their schedules get underway in the western New York travel league. The Greece Buccaneers annual soccer tournament is scheduled for the weekend of May 21st. The Cobra tournament is July 10. Both events draw teams from western New York and Canada.
- As you begin to think about where you spent your time this spring and summer, please consider giving 3 to 4 hours a month to the SportsPark. We really need the help in the Concessions area. The only requirement is a good smile and a willingness to serve others. You will hear more about this need as we get closer to May 1st.
- A review of the Park’s concessions menu is underway. Some of the items under consideration for addition to the menu will require the Park to add kitchen equipment to the Park’s inventory. If you have a desire to help financially with these purchases please contact Diane or me.
- Norm Pike and the Lawn croquet group have approached us to offer assistance in building a pavilion/storage facility near the lawn croquet area. Details are being worked out on design and the actual location. These details need to be finalized before we can approach the Town of Greece for the necessary building permit.
Prayer Needs for 2010 and beyond:
- Completion of the original Park site plan including
o The construction of two picnic pavilions near the activities building
o Cost of the pavilions is estimated at $8,000 to $10,000 each
- Replacement Lawn Mower - estimated at $10,000 to $12,000
- Development of a summer basketball program
o Need to have a paved area to allow for the courts -$15,000
- Scoreboards for the seven baseball/softball fields
- Kitchen equipment to support changes to the Park’s menu - $1,500
- Concrete floor for the south/JPJ pavilion - $2500
- Materials for building 6-8 new picnic tables - $1500
If you have any interest in helping us with any of these needs, please do not hesitate to contact me here.
A huge thank you to all of the families that continue to provide financial support to the SportsPark through your church offerings or United Way contributions. Praise be to God for your faithfulness. We could not survive without your generosity.
Last but certainly not least, the efforts of so many individual volunteers are reflected in the quality of the facility. These individuals come and share their time and talent and get little in the way of recognition. Thank you all so very much. Words cannot express the debt of gratitude you are due. Praise God for your faithful service.
In His Service,
Graham Cresswell
